Owner Profile & Resume

I, Elisabeth Steele, have been working in the horse industry as a professional trainer, instructor and equine caregiver for 40 years. Having owned, managed and operated four commercial boarding and training facilities I have a broad knowledge of all aspects of horse care. As a trainer and instructor, I have experience training horses and riders in a wide variety of disciplines including Dressage, Combined Training, Hunters, Jumpers, and Hunt Seat Equitation.

Areas of Expertise:

  • Handling any and all care scenarios; general maintenance, nutrition, layups, and veterinary care, geriatric issues, grooming, clipping, lunging, loading, etc.

  • Have taught all levels of rider. Adept at dealing with timid riders and fear issues.

  • Starting and re-starting horses in training.

  • Preparing horses as sales prospects or laying the proper foundation for upper-level work.

  • Problem-solving in regards to issues with difficult or young horses.

  • Training thoroughbreds and teaching their owners how to work with them.

  • Designing attractive, cost-efficient and user-friendly horse barns for Construction Management of Southwest Florida.

Qualifications:

As a junior and young adult, I was involved in The United States Pony Club and acquired a broad interest in all disciplines. I was fortunate to work with and study under some of the top trainers in the country:

George Williams (Dressage), Kathy Connelly (Dressage), Julie Ulrich (Dressage)

Frederick Hunt (Hunt Seat Equitation), Ian Silitch (Jumpers & Hunters), Susan Tuckerman (Jumpers & Combined Training), Carl Catani (Hunters & Hunt Seat Equitation), Mitch Steege (Hunters & Jumpers)

Continuing Education:

As a professional, I feel it is important to keep my teaching fresh and up to date. Over the last 15 years I have ridden in and audited clinics with:

George Morris, Geoff Teal, Michael Dennehy, Scott Hoffstetter, Archie Cox, and Jimmy Wofford.

In 2008 and 2009 I Participated in the USEF Trainers Symposiums in Wellington Florida

I have spent most of my life riding and handling all breeds of horses at various levels of training. I have also spent that time teaching individuals of all ages and levels of riding. I have developed a system which enables me to pinpoint the problem areas that hinder a horse's or person's ability to progress to the next level.

As an equine handler and caregiver, I have always done my own work around the barn. I firmly believe that your relationship with a horse begins on the ground, not on their back. I like to take a "whole health" approach to training horses. What horses eat, how their feet are shod, how they are handled and cared for all contribute to their well being and performance under tack.
